Welcome

There are so many resources available to help us gain insight, practice self-care, provide self-soothing and increase compassion for ourselves and others. As a therapist, I find that our clients teach us so much! Like bees spreading pollen, we can share what each of us discovers. Here are just a few useful offerings; over time we will add more - from our research, wise colleagues, and you! Take your time exploring, return often, and send us your most engaging and insightful books and references to share with others. We do not vouch for the content of each and every resource - explore with discernment! Where possible, for printed materials, we have tried to provide a link to an independent, and if possible BIPOC-owned bookstore. But you know where else to find them if need be...

A groundbreaking book that tells us what we already knew in our unconscious pain - and gives us brave new ways to understand and heal from white body supremacy

The Mindful Brain

Reflection and Attunement in the Cultivation of Well-Being

An essential volume to understand the way our brain contributes to our challenges - and how it can guide our healing

No Bad Parts

Richard Schwartz

Healing Trauma and Restoring Wholeness with the Internal Family Systems Model

Based in the intuitive knowledge that we all have different "parts" of ourselves, Schwartz offers a safe and loving way to explore the conflicts we experience in our inner life, and find ways to embrace and heal those parts with an insightful and compassionate Self. Cultivating that Self is a crucial aspect of the work.

The Internal Family Systems Workbook

Richard Schwartz

Recently released, this workbook is a step=by-step hourney through the process of discovering our "parts" and bringing clarity to what often feels like inner conflict and confusion. Working alone or with a therapist, readers can make significant progress in building a more compassionate and understanding relationship with themselves - and build more positive relationships with others as well.

Get Out of Your Mind and Into Your Life!

Hayes and Smith

A Workbook: The New Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

While we do not see ACT is the be-all, this workbook has been surprisingly popular with our clients. It guides you through a mindful and structured, gentle but direct approach investigation of beliefs that may be in your way.

For a different take on the same theme, we've heard this is great too! But haven't read it yet...
Unf*ck Yourself: Get out of your head and into your life by Gary John Bishop

5 Benefits of Mindfulness for Black, Indigenous, and Women of Color

Katara McCarty

From mindful.org

A great article that explores the usefulness of mindfulness-based practice for (self-identified) BIPOC women, who have for so long both carried the burdens and provided strength and solace in our oppressive world.

The Gifts of Imperfection, etc.

Brené Brown

So many Books, podcasts, articles!  Brené's work falls in all of these categories. Her earlier work focuses on moving beyond shame, building resilience and "daring greatly." More recently, her work moves towards anti-racism and principled leadership. Start on her website and explore it all - worth your time.

The Difference Between Self-worth and Self-esteem

Sam Woolfe

This article addresses an important distinction and asks some probing questions. I personally learned a lot about why this is an important distinction. And I also want to explore that last point much more deeply: how do self-esteem and self-worth actually interact? How can we use one to improve and strengthen the other?

Nedra Tawwab

nedratawwab.com

Author of Setting Boundaries, Finding Peace - Tawwab is popular on IG and shows up in many podcasts, like The Sugar Bowl. Her approach seeks to connect our childhood experiences to our adult ability to strengthen and improve, rather than end, our important relationships with healthy, specific boundaries, communicated lovingly and firmly. In other words, letting folks we care about know what we need.

The Gottman Institute

gottman.com

The Gottmans have developed a clear and multi-layered approach to enriching intimate partner relationships, based on years of research around the qualities and practices of couples who have been happy together over a long term. The website includes a Store with engaging and ofttimes enjoyable programs, game cards, and conflict resolution models that many couples find helpful.* (These products do not replace couples counseling with a qualified therapist, especially a LMFT.)
